Conflict on the Crimean peninsula goes all the way back to the Greeks. Iphigenia, the eldest daughter of the doomed House of Atreus, has been rescued from death at her father’s hand, to become a priestess of the goddess Diana in the kingdom of the Scythians. Charged with sacrificing any stranger who dares come ashore, Iphigenia struggles to overcome tragedy, oppression and her family’s bloody legacy to reunite with the brother she believed to be dead. Gluck’s ravishing score (premiered in 1779) was an operatic turning point, uniting music and drama to eschew the excesses of the Baroque stage. Sung in French with projected English supertitles.

Music by Christoph Willibald Gluck
Libretto by Nicolas-François Guillard based on the play by Euripides
Conducted by Andrew Altenbach
Stage direction by Johnathon Pape
